Studies Show A Few Cups Of Tea A Day Keep Heart Disease at Bay

Kick-starting your day with a hot cup of tea or a tall glass of refreshing iced tea to let off steam on a hot sunny day is truly a thing to relish and be grateful for. Interestingly, tea has played such an integral part in our lives that it would seem incomplete without it. In fact, tea is the most consumed beverage second only to water! The art of drinking tea has long been practised and enjoyed by various peoples and cultures across the globe for more than 5000 years, all the while recognizing the many powerful health benefits it offers.  But it is only through research in modern days that we have come to know about the astounding benefit of tea drinking – that it leads to a healthier heart.

The health benefits of teas, especially herbal teas, are not something that is unknown to us. We have been told how certain herbal teas or tisanes can improve our health and that includes heart health. But unfortunately, not everyone is a fan of teas, yet everyone desires a hearty health and not to mention, a healthy beating heart. This article might just help you change your mind and give you solid reasons why drinking tea might just be the right thing to do!

Here’s What Science Has To Say About Teas

According to research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, it has been shown that people who drink tea three or more times a week have improved cardiovascular health and an increased lifespan. It has also been shown that green tea drinkers were more likely to experience these benefits –with men more likely on the higher spectrum rather than women. The same research also attributed these benefits to polyphenols, which is a compound found mostly in black and green tea, as well as other foods.

Another study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing has shown that out of two groups (those who drank tea three or more times per week and those who didn’t) from their 100,902 participants with no prior history of heart attack, stroke, or cancer, those who drank tea more frequently were more likely to stay healthy for a longer period of time. The long-term study which lasted for 7.3 years also showed that the chance of developing heart disease and stroke, dying from heart disease and stroke and death by other causes were lowered by 20%, 22% and 15% respectively.

A subset of slightly more than 14,000 people was also assessed in a follow-up study. Those who kept their tea-drinking habit in both studies saw more pronounced benefits, including a 56% lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke.

All Thanks to Polyphenol

As mentioned earlier, these benefits of teas might have something to do with the presence of polyphenols, organic chemicals that are found in both black and green tea. They are derived from plants, especially flowering plants. It is the ‘phenol’ part of polyphenols where plants and flowers derive their scent or aroma. And with impressive cardiovascular benefits, polyphenols are a booster for cardiovascular health. They help improve the function of the blood vessels, which include more dilating and less constriction, and also help increase good cholesterol, which is also cardiac protective. These compounds also help reduce inflammation and make our platelets, clotting factor, less sticky.

With that being said, it is important to keep in mind that polyphenols are not retained in the body for long. Hence, frequent sipping of tea is the answer and a necessity to reap the hearty benefits.

Which Tea is the Best?

When it comes to health benefits, the type of tea you drink matters, as do any medications you might be taking. You also have to consider your individual caffeine sensitivity. In general, the best types of tea are those made from the Camellia Sinensis shrub: black, white, green, and Oolong.

          1. Green Tea

It pays to go green when it comes to the health of your heart. Green tea is known to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Regular consumption of it is also associated with a lower risk of heart disease and death from a heart attack or stroke. Green tea is also home to powerful antioxidants like epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which is known to help prevent atherosclerosis or the buildup of plaque in the arteries.

          2. Oolong Tea

Several studies have demonstrated that Oolong tea helps in lowering cholesterol levels and also in reducing triglycerides and food intake, though more research is needed to be certain.

         3. White Tea

White tea contains flavonoids that help dilate the arteries and support heart health. It is a natural blood thinner, helps lower blood pressure and helps reduce bad cholesterol. It is a tea that not only protects the heart but also the entire circulatory system.

         4. Ginseng Tea

Several studies have demonstrated the heart-boosting effects of Ginseng tea. It has been known to lower blood pressure by relaxing the arteries, thins the blood by blocking platelet adhesion, and may improve cholesterol profiles. It is in fact a tasty replacement for a more sugary beverage, which also has heart-boosting benefits.
