Communicable Diseases - Prevention is Necessary

Infectious diseases or a subcategory of transmissible diseases are known as communicable diseases. The diseased person in case of communicable diseases not only suffers himself but also acts as a source of infection to the people he or his secretions come in contact with.

The term contagious disease originally referred to a contagion, a derivative of contact. It only included diseases that were transmissible by direct physical contact. The term has been broadened in the current times to include any communicable or infectious disease.

Let us delve into methods of transmission of communicable diseases:

  • Direct Contact:
These diseases are transmitted from one person to other people either by physical contact with the person suffering from the disease.

Staphylococcus which is responsible for causing boils, food poisoning and other infections can spread through touch. Sexual intercourse with an infected person is responsible for the transmission of HIV and gonorrhoea. Other infections that spread through direct contact include coronavirus infection, measles and ringworm.A woman teaching young kids to sanitise with sanitiser

Prevention Tip: Avoid direct contact with the diseased or infected person such as handshakes, mouth-to-mouth kissing and sexual intercourse. Use protection while sexual intercourse and avoid multiple partners.
  • Droplet Infection:
Bacteria and virus can get transmitted through air droplets and infect an apparently healthy person within the vicinity of the infected person on coughing, sneezing and spitting of an infected person. The examples of such infections include measles, common cold, coronavirus infection and tuberculosis.

Prevention Tip: Cover your face while sneezing and coughing. If you have someone around you sneezing and coughing, maintain a distance of at least one meter or 3 feet from him.

  • Contact with a Contaminated Surface:
Contact with soil can be responsible for transmission of bacterial cysts of tetanus. If the table or chair around has pathogens, they can enter your eyes, mouth or nose if you get your hands contaminated and touch your face with them. Unclean hands are responsible for the transmission of coronavirus infection, Ascariasis which is an infection of small intestine caused by a species of roundworms, and Enterobiasis which is a parasitic infection of small intestine, especially in children.

Pathogens can also get transmitted through contaminated articles like handkerchiefs, towels and crockery.

Prevention Tip: Avoid touching your face with hands frequently. Make a habit of washing your hands at regular intervals and keep them moisturised.

  • Through Vectors:
Vectors are living organisms that transmit infectious pathogens between humans or from animals to humans. Examples of vector-borne diseases include malaria and dengue which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Sleeping sickness is transmitted by Tse fly. Cholera is transmitted by house fly.

Prevention Tip: Use precautionary measures such as covering yourself completely and using nets while sleeping where vectors are prevalent.

  • Through Vehicles:
Pathogens of cholera, dysentery and many other diseases are transmitted by vehicles like contaminated food and water. AIDS can be spread by transmission of blood and semen of suffering donors.Viruses and Infections vector in blue colour

Prevention Tip: Infected people should never donate blood or other body fluids. Eat home-cooked food, preferably freshly prepared. In areas with contaminated water, it should be boiled and filtered before drinking.

Prevention and management of communicable diseases are must to improve health and quality of life of people and limit transmission of infections to non-infected people. While the external measures focus on staying away from pathogens, vehicles and vectors; the emphasis shall always be made on strengthening the immune system. An efficient immune system can safeguard you against pathogens present in air around you as well as pathogens which are trying to enter and manifest infection in your body.
