Alcohol Addiction

Alcohol addiction is the term used for alcoholism i.e. a condition in which alcohol intake dominates a person’s life. It has no specific cause and can be triggered due to different reasons. It is not just an activity that individuals indulge in occasionally but an actual behavioural disease. Alcohol addiction affects the brain and body. It can cause serious liver, kidney and heart diseases and also death in extreme circumstances.
The symptoms of alcohol addiction can be different for different people. This condition is hard to detect. Sometimes, when it might seem to be a source of enjoyment, it can actually be a serious issue. 
 
Some symptoms to detect alcohol addiction are:
  1. High intake of alcohol 
  2. Secretive or hidden drinking habits
  3. Too much stress or depression
  4. Drifting behaviour
  5. Frequent or daily consumption of alcohol
 
Do’s 
  • Take the patient to a good rehabilitation centre
  • ?Ensure timely treatment
  • Bring in nutritional changes and introduce foods beneficial for liver and kidneys
  • Reduce financial assistance
  • Behave patiently with the addicted person 
  • Provide emotional support
 
 Don’ts
  • Do not be very harsh as it may give the patient reason to increase their alcohol intake
  • Do not make the patient feel lonely or sad. Try to maintain a happy atmosphere around him/ her
  • Let the patient be around alcohol, try to remove any alcohol from the patient’s home
