Baldness

Baldness

Baldness or hair loss is also known as alopecia. It is complete or partial loss of hair from the head and may involve the whole scalp or small areas. This can lead to psychological trauma or distress. Alopecia can be of different types such as male-pattern baldness, female pattern baldness, telogen effluvium (thinning of the hair), alopecia aerate etc and have different causes. If hair loss is related to men, it may be due to the male hormones or genetics. Alopecia aerate is an autoimmune disorder and telogen effluvium baldness may be due to stress (psychological or physical) or pregnancy.

Cause of female baldness is still unknown; it may be due to genetics or poor diet or certain chemotherapy or other long term medical treatments related to hormones. Treatments of baldness may include supplements, medication, steroid injections and hair transplant surgery. Baldness is more common in men than female. Male pattern baldness affects almost two third of the people at the age of 21 to 35 years.
