Dementia

Dementia is a brain disorder in which there is a slow decline in the functioning of the brain. This syndrome leads to interference in daily activities like memory loss, thinking speed, mental sharpness, movement, language, quickness, speech, attention and reasoning. Damage to brain cells leads to the malfunctioning of one or more regions of brain causing dementia. There is no certain treatment determined for this problem but some medications might help with some symptoms.

Do’s

  • Treat patients with utmost care
  • Introduce yourself before starting a conversation
  • Speak to them in a clear voice and tone
  • When in tension, divert them with pleasing words or activity
  • Behave patiently with dementia patients as they may take time to respond
  • Listen to them and try to solve their problems
  • Spend time with them and share past memories
  • Consult a neurologist

Don’ts

  • Do not respond with anger or frustration
  • Do not irritate the patients with questions.
  • Do not travel and visit crowded places with the patients
  • Do not argue with the patients instead agree to what they say
  • Do not keep correcting them
