Medically known as rhinosinusitis, sinusitis or sinus inflammation is a common condition that occurs when your nasal passages get infected, swollen and inflamed. The sinuses are hollow spaces located within the bones behind the forehead and the cheekbones, and between the eyes. They produce mucus, which keeps the inside of the nose moist, which in turn, helps protect against dust, allergens, and pollutants.
When the sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, virus, bacteria, or fungus may grow and cause an infection. This often leads to an inflammatory reaction, thereby causing a sinus infection. Other conditions such as allergies, chemical or particulate irritation, nasal polyps, and tooth infections can also contribute to this. Sinusitis often persists even after other upper respiratory symptoms are gone.
