Cumin

Cumin aka Cuminum cyminum is a flowering plant that belongs to the plant family Apiaceae. It was originally grown in Middle East and India. Cumin is also known as Jeera, Jeere and Jeerey in Hindi, Marathi and Bengali languages. Cumin seeds are found in the fruit of cumin plant. These seeds are brown in colour with striped patterns of ridges and canals. 


Cumin seeds are hot and bitter in taste and have a strong aroma. Due to the spicy flavour, these seeds are commonly used for flavouring dishes. Cumin seeds are a rich source of vitamins, thiamine, niacin, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, carbohydrates, fats and fatty acids. Due to these amazing nutritional qualities, it has been used for years in medicines and health supplements. 


Benefits of Cumin Seeds

  • Digestion: Water boiled with cumin seeds has a high percentage of anti-oxidants and helps in improving digestion. Even the powdered form can be used for improving digestive health. Gastric issues, bloating, morning sickness, nausea etc. can also be prevented with the use of cumin seeds. Cumin seeds help in easy breakdown of carbohydrates and fat which in turn prevents accumulation of fat in the body.
