Stomach Trouble in Summer

The warm weather does mark the end to problems of chilly temperatures. That does not mean the warm weather would be a complete fairy tale story. Agreed, there would be no shivering due to chilly air but the hot air has its own set of problems to give. Summer is here and so are the troubles with it.

The first is that high temperature makes you sweat more and the second is that it does not let you eat properly. It has been found that majority of digestion related illnesses occur in summers in India due to compromised immunity levels. There are many digestive disorders that can trouble you during summers such as:

  • Gastroenteritis:  
    It is also known as infectious diarrhoea and refers to inflammation of gastrointestinal tract which includes the stomach and the small intestine. Its commonly caused by viruses but it may also be caused by bacteria, parasites, and fungus. Typically the symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and pain in abdomen. The other accompanying symptoms include fever, lack of energy and dehydration. Common risk factors for gastroenteritis include eating improperly cooked food, consuming contaminated food or water, coming in close contact with a person who can spread the infection. The affected person takes nearly two weeks to recover.
  • Typhoid:
    It is usually a water- borne disease and is commonly occurs in summers. The causative agent of diseases is bacteria which is a specific type of Salmonella. The symptoms of typhoid can begin in the infected person after 6-30 days of exposure. The sufferer usually presents with fever, pain in abdomen, headache, and rash. Common risk factors for typhoid include poor hygiene and poor sanitation. It usually spreads by consuming food or water contaminated with feces. The diseased person can take three weeks or more to recover.
  • Food Poisoning:
    It typically happens within 6 to 8 hours of eating contaminated food kept in unhygienic conditions. A person can usually realise it on their own that he/ she has consumed something which is responsible for food poisoning. It can occur due to toxins, chemicals, virus, bacteria, parasite or a prion present in food. The symptoms may begin after few hours to one month of exposure. And may include vomiting, diarrhoea and pain in abdomen. Fever, blood in stool and dehydration can also accompany. The person can recover within few days or may take longer if the severity of infection in more.

Prevention is way better than suffering!

It is better to sail through the summers without falling sick rather than spending some precious days of your life on a hospital bed. The troubles affecting stomach can be prevented by taking some protective steps at home and in your daily life.

  • Value the food cooked at home:
    It is best to avoid eating outside food in summers. You never know what quality of ingredients have been used and for how long the food has been kept as it is. Contrary to it, you know the freshness and hygiene that the food cooked at your home carries with it. Carry a lunch box to your office or wherever you go to avoid outside food.
  • Go for freshly prepared food:
    Try to eat food that has been prepared the same day. If you are consuming food that was prepared last night, heat it before putting it into your stomach. This can reduce the risk of stomach problems but does effect digestion. Therefore, fresh, seasonal, and local is the best.
  • Make a water bottle your best friend:
    Never underestimate the power of hydration and the troubles due to dehydration. To ensure that you drink water at regular intervals, carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go. You can avoid majority of diseases in summers if maintain a steady intake of water. Also, water helps in creating softer and bulkier stools so that they make easy passage outside the body and do not lead to piles and fissures.
  • Improve your fibre intake:
    Whole grains, vegetables, legumes and fruits have fibre which improve the digestive tract. A diet high in fibre helps in evacuating faecal matter easily from the body and thus helps in avoiding constipation. Both, water and fibre help in flushing out toxins and pathogens from the body.
  • Limit your coffee intake:
