Prolapsed Disc
Prolapsed disc or slipped disc is also referred to Spinal Disc Herniation. It is the injury to the disc or the cushioning and connective tissue between vertebrae. Vertebra is an irregular bone with a complex structure. It is composed of bone and some hyaline cartilage which is a glass like translucent cartilage. It is pearl grey in colour. The proportions of hyaline cartilage vary according to the segment of the backbone and the type and location of vertebrae.
In general postures, the internal pressure is equal on all parts of discs such as during standing or lying down. During sitting or bending to lift weight, the internal pressure on a disc can rise to a large extent. Herniation or prolapse of the contents of disc into the spinal canal occurs when the stomach side of the disc is compressed while sitting or bending forward. In such a situation the contents of the disc known as nucleus pulposus get pressed against the tightly stretched and thinned membrane or the annulus fibrosus present on the posterior side or the back side of the disc. The membrane suffers from thinning due to stretching and there is increased internal pressure. This combination results in the rupture of the confining membrane. It is followed by the movement of jelly like contents of the disc into the spinal canal which presses against the spinal nerves. When nerves are pressed, the result is intense and leads to potentially disabling pain.
The risk factors for prolapsed disc include degeneration of the intervertebral discs due to ageing and degenerative disc disease. Professional athletes are prone to prolapsed disc and minor trauma to the disc can also be responsible for its Herniation. Smoking is also a major risk factor for prolapsed disc as it lessens the oxygen supply to the disc. Physically demanding occupation and genetic predisposition can also increase the risk of developing prolapsed disc.
The symptoms other than mild to severe pain can include changes of sensory nature such as numbing, tingling, paresthesia or an abnormal skin sensation e.g. pricking, burning. Muscular weakness, paralysis and slowdown of reflexes can also occur. The location of pain may vary from neck to lower back. If the lumbar area or lower back is affected; patient may also experience sciatica due to irritation of one of the nerve roots of sciatic nerve. It is also possible that the affected patient might not experience any pain at all.
Herniation of disc might also be associated with radiating pain to the groin region and incontinence of bladder and bowel. Generally symptoms affect only one side of the body but if the Herniation is very large and affects the entire spine by pressing nerves on both sides within the spinal column; both sides of the body can also be affected.
Prevention and Management of Prolapsed Disc
If you have not been a patient of prolapsed disc, but may have a tendency of repetitive injuries or brittle bones or family history, you can implement these techniques in your daily life to prevent it. If you are suffering from prolapsed disc; you can implement the following techniques to manage the situation:
Product of the Month: Arthrogold Combo
Arthrogold combo consists of Arthrogold Oil and Arthrogold Tablets. Arthrogold Tablets are made of shallaki, rasna, ashwagandha, black pepper and curcumin. Shallaki is highly effective in relieving pain and inflammation associated with prolapsed disc. Shallaki has the natural presence of chemical compounds diterpenes, triterpenes and tetra cyclic triterpenic which are anti inflammatory in nature and thus reduce inflammation associated with prolapsed disc. It also ameliorates or reduces pressure on any affected nerve. The anti-inflammatory activity of Rasna is also effective in reducing inflammation and pain associated with prolapsed disc. It also helps in rejuvenating the synovial fluid in discs for faster healing. Ashwagandha is a herb that helps in dealing with physical stress associated with prolapsed disc. It prevents degeneration of spinal joints which can be responsible for prolapsed disc. When we come to curcumin, we find that it possesses an exceptional anti-inflammatory profile. Micro-computed tomography data from NCBI published on 9 May, 2017 suggested that treatment with curcumin promotes disc height recovery following disc herniation. It reduces neuro-inflammation, oxidative stress and nociceptive factors such as interleukins and chemokines which are responsible for neuropathic pain. Black pepper has piperine that improves the absorption of curcumin in your body. Besides that, black pepper has its own anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive (nerve pain relieving) effect.
Arthrogold oil is made of a combination of oils extracted from 17 herbs. They are aloe vera, olive, nirgudi, punarnava, ginger, akarkara, rasna, peppermint, camphor, sesame, winter green, eucalyptus, erand, turpentine, ajwayan, clove, turmeric, cinnamon and nutmeg. This oil has been formulated using both cold and hot extraction techniques on herbs. Due to the process of formulation used, it acts as an anti-inflammatory oil and immediately penetrates into the skin on application. It initially numbs the nerves and then improves the blood circulation to the affected area and offers quick relief to the site at which it has been applied. In disc prolapse, it should be applied wherever there is any pain. Along with relieving pain and inflammation; this oil hastens the process of healing of the herniated disc and improves body’s mobility. The movements of the body are less painful when you apply this oil. A wonderful quality of Arthrogold oil is that it does not leave any mark on clothes since it penetrates quickly in the skin. The oil also prevents degeneration of the affected spinal joints.
Using this combo pack can decrease the need for allopathic painkillers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which with their ever increasing doses give multiple side effects.
It was all lit up!
October was a month of festivities. The Diwali preparations and celebrations were at full swing everywhere including our office premises. Before telling you further about us, Preserva Wellness sends a lot of Diwali wishes to each one of you, wishing you the best of good health. We were in a complete festive mood at our office and at our camps. The enthusiasm of our team was at a different level. On our website; we received and delivered the highest numbers of orders in any month till date. Here again; it is you who have been associated with us for so long and have helped us reach this place. Preserva Wellness expresses its gratitude to each customer and partner associated with us.
To boost our sales in our camps; we had a lot of new customers showering love on us. On 13th October, 2019 we were there at two places. One was at Sunder Nursery and the other was at Sarvodaya Enclave. Our teams enjoyed communicating with people at both the places. The teas quickly went out of stock there due to the coming winter! We had put a camp at Sunder Nursery on 20th October 2019 also and we were overwhelmed by the response we got there.
The message Diwali gives us is the celebration of victory of good over evil. The evil in our lives are the diseases that make us weak and decrease our productivity. The germs and microbes that decrease body’s immunity are the demons of modern life. The victory in true terms would include warding off evil with natural available medications and health supplements so that our body experiences minimum possible side effects. Good health and wealth is the modern form of victory! Celebrate health! Celebrate the year post-Diwali!
