Ashwagandha for Joint Pain and Arthritis
Withanolide, an Active Constituent from Ashwagandha’s root: Windfall for Joint Health
Pain is a silent epidemic all across the world. Since, it is not possible to measure the intensity of pain; one can only feel it as a horrid sensory and emotional experience, responsible for the cascade of negative impacts inside our body and mind. In general most of us try to tolerate pain till it has serious implications like knee replacement or transplant surgery. It could be felt in joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves due to various form of arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout or spondylitis etc. According to the recent data published by world health organization in 2017, 15-17% population in India, that is every one in six people and one in three families suffer from Arthritis and about 30% population is suffering from chronic pain due to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). Reports from the International Osteoporosis Foundation say, that about 50 million Indians are believed to suffer from Osteopenia or Osteoporosis and are susceptible to fractures due to low bone mineral density. It is expected that 600,000 Indians will get hip fractures by 2020 and it will become one of the leading health problems1 in India.
Joint pain treatmentThere is no dearth of joint pain treatments to fight against joint and muscular discomfort, Arthritis or Osteoporosis which includes use of pain killers, intra-articular hyaluronic acid and other injectables, hip or knee replacement surgeries etc. All of these treatments poured out by medical practitioners and hospitals cause a lot of deleterious side effects and are high in cost with a low success rate. All these factors give a bigger push for alternative treatments based on a herbal and natural origin. The use of painkillers or steroids can have harsh effects on the body and the safest and the gentlest of medicines come from the plant world and Ashwagandha comes on top along with Turmeric to fight inflammation, symptoms of arthritis and joint pain.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), has been used for over 3,000 years in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani Indian medical systems in Asian countries2. It is known to prevent additional degeneration of joints in arthritic patients and also used as an immunomodulatory agent, which is due to the presence of withanolides, a steroidal lactone3 and the main active constituent present in its roots. Immunomodulatory agents are known to modify the immune system by either creating anti-bodies or by changing the white blood cell count in the body for its protection. It is therefore very useful in the treatment of arthritis and its symptoms. Anti-inflammatory activity of withanolides has been attributed to biologically active steroids, and it is as effective as a hydrocortisone sodium succinate injection or knee pain injections, used to treat arthrithis4. It has been found to effectively suppress the effects and symptoms of arthritis without any side or toxic effects in a number of studies. Gout is also a type of arthritis, a characteristically intense acute inflammatory reaction resulting from the formation of sodium urate crystals in the joint cavity with extreme joint pain and swelling. Withanolide from Ashwagandha was found more effective in treating Gout in comparison to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug Indomethacin5. A team of doctors from AIIMS, New Delhi, India conducted the study on 125 Rheumatoid Arthritis patients and found Ashwagandha root powder had anti-inflammatory, anti-stress and immuno-modulatory properties, which help improving physical functions and is an effective treatment for joint pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Withanolide (withaferin A), prevents the loss of bone mineral density, especially after menopause, increases the action of bone-producing genes, and reduces bone resorption. It also lowers stress and inflammation, a major cause of bone density loss. It also promotes bone healing after injury and repairs osteoporotic bones due estrogen-like, anti-osteoporotic activity of withanolides.6 It has been found that withanolides increase the proliferation of cells that synthesize bone by increasing the specific genes that help increase the number of osteoblasts, that synthesize bones. It also promotes the survival of osteoblasts and suppresses the proteins that promote inflammation7. Osteoblasts are cells that sysnthesize bones and secrete the substance that forms bones. It increases bone mineral density by forming new bones and keeping the bone tissues healthy. It has also been found that withanolide (withaferin A) blocks the action of proteosomes or protein complexes that break down other proteins and thus promotes healing after injury and increases bone mineral density.
Since there is ample scientific evidence available for the proven results of with anolides against all kind of arthritis and osteoporosis, it is good to include it in your day to day life in the form of a capsule or tablet and use an alternative arthritis and joint pain treatment in place of allopathic medicines. Ashwagandha is a natural withanolide and hence it is safe for everyone to consume, irrespective of their age, for healthy joints and bones.
Preserva Wellness has created two novel formulations for healthy bone and joints. Preserva Bonboost Tablets and Arthrogold Tablets contain Ashwagandha (2% withanolides) as one of major ingredients along with Curcumin. Both the tablets in combination have fantastic results for strong bone mineral density and any kind of Arthritis, Osteoporosis, joint or muscular pain.

Five Natural Tips to get Relief from Arthritis Pain this Winter
(Nov 29, 2017; Times Now Digital)
During cold and winter season most of our friends and family members complains about increased aches and pains in their joints and muscles during cold, wet weather. Various studies have found significant links between humidity, temperature and joint pain. Hence, as the mercury levels drop, you would certainly want to find some ways to manage arthritis pain if you are living with the condition as the cold weather can trigger a flare-up. Usually, the treatment for arthritis is through anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers but it does not provide a long term cure for arthritis and bone density or joint pain problems. But many people are turning to natural remedies to manage their condition as some medications can cause side effects. Here are five tips to help you get relief from joint pain and aches this winter:
1. Eat right
Maintain a healthy, balanced diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables like spinach, tomatoes, oranges, and cabbage which are all rich in antioxidants that can help reduce joint pain and inflammation in the body. Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids in your diet which have been shown to reduce joint pain and stiffness as a substitute treatment for arthritis. However, avoid artificial sweeteners, refined carbohydrates (processed foods) and too much red meat as they can aggravate joint pain, inflammation and arthritis.
2. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and active. Drinking adequate amount of water and keeping the body hydrated will help reduce friction between the joint surfaces thereby reducing the risk of Arthritis or Osteoporosis. A 2015 study published in the journal Experimental Physiology suggested that even mild dehydration might make you more sensitive to pain.
3. Get active
Regular movements will not only help you to stay in shape, it will also promote flexibility in your joints. It's just that exercise is crucial for people with arthritis to keep their joint and muscle pain at bay. It will also help maintain bone strength and combat fatigue.
4. Lose weight
If you are overweight, shedding a few kilograms can help reduce the pain of arthritis. Losing weight will reduce stress on your joints, which in turn will help increase mobility, decrease pain and prevent further damage to the joints.
5. Soak up
A lack of Vitamin D can affect your bones, joints and overall health. As per research published in the Clinical Journal of Pain, individuals low on vitamin D levels reported significantly higher pain in the joints, especially knee joint and loss in function and bone density.
