CURCUMIN AND TURMERONE AND THE BEAT IS GOING ON
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have now become the leading cause of mortality in India and ¼th of all deaths are attributable to these. The Global Burden of Disease study’s estimate of age-standardized CVD death rate at 272 per 100,000 population in India is higher than the global average of 235 per 100,000 population . Stress, hypertension, poor diet and unhealthy lifestyle are the major causes for the CVDs. What is more concerning is that it is no more an ‘old age’ disease. More young and middle aged population is suffering from heart disease today than ever before in history. Nature’s basket has the cure of all diseases including CVDs. Herbalists and folk practitioners have used plant remedies for centuries, but only recently have scientists begun to study the powers of common herbs. In the current set-up, the anti-proliferative, anti-hypercholesterolemic, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory effects of natural herbal products have overriding importance, as the key health concern of mankind nowadays is diabetes, cardio-vascular diseases, tissue damage and inflammation caused by high levels of blood sugar and circulating lipids. Turmeric the golden holy spice from our kitchens is one of the best, clinically proven cures for CVDs. It contains a number of biological active compounds including Curcumin (major curcuminoid) and Turmerone (fatty acid). Curcumin protects the body from numerous heart disease risk factors, including suppressing chronic inflammation, reducing the impact of high glucose and normalizing blood lipid profiles. As a result, curcumin can mitigate the cascading of events that leads to heart attacks, heart failure, strokes and even microvascular complications seen primarily in diabetic people. The antioxidant effects of curcumin have been shown to attenuate adriamycin-induced cardio toxicity and may prevent diabetic cardiovascular complications. The anti-thrombotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin and the effect of curcumin in decreasing the serum cholesterol level may protect against the pathological changes occurring with atherosclerosis (arterial blockage)

Curcumin and Turmerone and the Beat is Going On.. Although curcumin is thought to be the most active component of turmeric extract, its pharmacological potential may be limited by its extremely low water solubility and poor bioavailability. As curcumin is relatively lipid soluble, the presence of lipophilic components turmerones in turmeric extract, facilitates the absorption of curcumin in the body. Transportation of curcumin in intestinal cells is found to be enhanced in the presence of turmerones. Therefore, use of turmeric extract (including curcumin and turmerones), other than curcumin alone has more therapeutic effect. Apart from it turmerones also have anti-platelet properties that could help prevent harmful blood clots, such as those that cause strokes and heart attacks.

Turmeric linked to avert the risk of cardiovascular diseases, the present study claims - By William Hazzard

Turmeric is known to be an integral part of Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha medicine in Asian countries of the world. It’s most popularly used in Indian dishes for giving relishing taste to all the foodstuffs. It has anti-inflammatory properties with a number of health benefits such as weight loss, healing of the wound, and curing of arthritis. What additional turmeric can serve is reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and heart stroke, claims the recent study conducted by Dr. Ronald Cotterel, at Sutter Medical Group. The research also exposed additional benefits of curcumin compound found in turmeric. “Clinical trials reveal that consuming 4 grams of turmeric continuously for 4 days before surgery and 5 days’ post-surgery can reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and chances of by-pass surgery by 56 percent as compared to placebo”, discloses Natural Medicines Database.

Since curcumin compound found in turmeric has antioxidant properties, it can help in the oxidation of vital body parts thus dropping the chances of deadly cancer. Additionally, consuming 1.4 grams of turmeric on daily basis can help to thwart low-density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol, triglyceride and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol in individuals.“Along with turmeric, consuming proper, nourishing diet, and regular exercise is equally important to prevent cholesterol level, heart attacks, heart strokes and manage stress”, concludes Dr. Cotterel.
